Tonight marks a somewhat interesting move where nightclubs are concerned at the Village Café. The Barbican Road nightspot and live music venue will host a BYOB (bring your own bottle) party, called The Cat's Meow, staged with Quizz of whaddat.com fame. The organisers are planning for the event to become a weekly fixture as of tonight.
Prior to this, BYOB parties have almost virtually been the sole province of private homes, put on by people for friends and neighbours. As the name implies, patrons/guests are required to bring a bottle - usually of an alcoholic beverage - in order to gain admission.
The same goes in this case, but with some added regulations. Attendees are required to bring a 750ml bottle of alcohol - vodka, rum. etc or a six-pack of beer. Failing that, those who want to get on the act will be required to pay $600 with an invitation, or $1,000 for admission. Once inside, the event is drink-inclusive, with patrons able to drink all night free.
Quizz runs entertainment information site whaddat.com. Robert Collins, the proprietor of the Village Café, when asked about the seeming oddity of having a bottle party at a nightclub, said that ". because it's never been done and that's what we do at Village - we set trends. It's gonna be all about coming, having fun, not watching anybody. it's just a party like back in the day, when parties like Pip 'n' Ting and Gin 'n' Juice use to 'run the place'. That's the vibe we want to create again. It's all about a new school vibe with an old school flavour. It's all about the music and friends - we're going back to basics in Kingston's living room."
Carrie-Ann Sigurdson, better known as the maverick Quizz, describes The Cat's Meow as 'a mature MadPuss project'. "It's the Top 40 vibes, the opportunity to chill and drink with your friends. We're starting it out as a bottle party, to build up into the ultimate ladies' night. It's starting from scratch, word-of-mouth, so the bottle party route is the way to go!"
Continuing, she said "Kicking off the off season, after summer, Village on Fridays will be the place to be for all females on the party circuit. Free at the gate, free drinks, free PINK drinks and part proceeds in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness! For right now though, bring a bottle every Friday (or pay $600 at the gate), drinking all night included and have a great time with friends."
