Da'Ville's On My Mind beats the sophomore jinx
RECORD RACK

Friday, May 25, 2007

Da'ville's latest is On My Mind.

Singer Da'Ville has beaten the sophomore jinx normally associated with most major releases. His second release, On My Mind, which is the follow-up to last year's In Heaven, certainly lives up to expectations, and is probably a better collection than his debut opus.

There are at least eight hit-worthy tracks on this 14-track disc, not counting the previously released chart-toppers Always On My Mind (the remix featuring Sean Paul which recently topped the UK reggae chart is also included), Can't Get Over You and This Time I Promise.

The addition of the Donovan Germain-produced single All My Life (one of three covers on the album) was a smart move, considering the fact that this was the track that seven years ago made listeners stand up and take note of Da'Ville's vocal muscles, shortly after the ARP demise.

What I really love about this album is the diversity in the production, the use of live instruments and the tight harmonies on the recordings.

A cover of the song And So I'll Wait For You (made popular by Freddie McGregor in the late 1980s) and Dennis Brown's Have You Ever Been In Love; Yesterday; I'm in Love With You; and Give Thanks For What You've Got are primed cuts with gritty seriousness that make this VP Records disc a challenging listen.

If given the right promotional muscle, On My Mind could easily rub shoulders with some of the chart-toppers on the international music charts.
