The Asylum nightclub in New Kingston was abuzz earlier this week where Shaggy's video for Church Heathen was reshot under the direction of Jay Will.
The song, which has emerged as a major comeback hit for Shaggy, has subsequently topped local charts as well as several overseas reggae charts.
Shaggy said the decision to reshoot the video was due to several overseas interests in the clip as well as the overwhelming popularity of the original. "We decided to re-shoot the video because a whole heap of people love it. We decided on a continuation of the story because there is a great demand for the original. I just came back from England and that's how I realised how popular it is there. We decided to take it back to the dance with this concept. The video starts in a session. You will see all the main members of the church at the dance," Shaggy explained.
The video features over 150 dancers including Mad Michelle, the Portmore-based Dallas Dancers, Timeless Dancers (with Doctor Bird), Black Blingaz and Cadillac Dancers. "Throughout the success of Church Heathen, a lot of dance moves came on the scene. We figured we should highlight the majority of these dance moves. Now we are shooting on film and it's better quality, and a better budget to make everything better", said Shaggy, who declined to state the budget for the reshoot.
Having parted company with Geffen last year, Shaggy said he has no shortage of offers from overseas companies. "There is no shortage of majors trying to sign me. The problem is, if I sign with one right now, they are going to bring in a Timbaland to remix Church Heathen and then take the whole album and change it up and try to manipulate things," he pointed out, adding: "We will go back on a major label when I reach a point where I have things under full control."
Danny Champagnie's VIP rhythm takes flight
Caught up with producer Danny Champagnie during the Church Heathen video shoot. Champagnie has been instrumental in generating the local buzz on several projects, including Collie Buddz's Come Around and Brick and Lace's Never Never.
Champagnie's VIP rhythm, which was released late last year is reportedly making some serious moves in England. "Right now the VIP rhythm is big in England. I am trying to get Bounty Killer, Mavado, Busy Signal and Collie Buddz to record tracks for the project. We plan to relaunch the project and do a video or two," said Champagnie.
Actively involved in music video production, Champagnie says he has been getting calls from different quarters about his latest productions, including the chart-topping video for the Migraine rhythm. "I have been working with Keyboard Money Mike on the videos. Most people might recall him from his work with rap artiste KRS-One," said Champagnie. Camar prepares for video shoot this weekend
Singer Camar, formerly Flavr Unit, is getting ready to shoot his latest music video this weekend. The clip is for the song She Just Like the Flavour and it will be shot on Saturday at the UWI Visitor's Lodge.
Additionally, Camar is contemplating a video for the song Before You Go Away, featured on the Guardian Angel rhythm. The song has been getting massive airplay locally.
