It's quite interesting that so much 'reggae' news is surfacing in Reggae Month, and, yes, a lot of it has to do with Bob Marley.
We recently heard about the Martin Scorcese film, and there is also news that Adi Dassler's Adidas brand is set to unleash a global campaign that includes reggae music and the late reggae icon. According to Mediapost, the campaign involves some short films, one of which - Sounds of the City - will promote a number of Adidas Originals products.
The first film focuses on Adi Dassler and there is a very short clip of Bob Marley, a fitting tribute to the singer who was well-known for loving football and wearing Adidas. The campaign is the first by Adidas promoting its Originals lifestyle range, which includes retro products similar to that worn by Marley, either casually or when playing football. He is recognised with the Marley Jacket and the Pro Model Tuff Gong Adidas shoes, but there is also the Pro Model Kingston (shoes) and the Kingston zip jacket.
Sportwear giant, Puma's association with Jamaica is well known through its sponsorship of national athletics, and a product range that now stretches to fragrance. Adidas and Puma, two of the world's largest sportswear brands, were founded by German brothers Adi and Rudi Dassler respectively.
Not so Irie
Some things should be a given. Like the fact that at an Irie FM Award, an event held by an Irie FM disc jock should not be eligible for entry. This is the Irie FM awards and the bulk of the people who are choosing are from Irie FM and sister station Zip. And therein lies our problem with GT Taylor's Magnum Extravaganza winning the Stage Show/Concert of the Year for 2007.
And, this becomes even more incredible when one examines the calibre of shows that were nominated in this category Beres Hammond's A Moment in Time, Richie Stephen's Take Me Away, Rebel Salute and the Portland Jerk Festival.
We are left to wonder what exactly is the qualification for winning in this category. Of course, we are not shouting nepotism or sentiment or any such thing, we are simply saying that it's important that things appear to be fair. Let some other award body give the award to GT Taylor's Magnum Extravaganza.
Will Beenie Man ever stop being DJ of the Year?
First of all, we must congratulate Beenie Man on winning the DJ of the Year title at the recent EME and Irie FM awards. Surely this makes it the 100th time he's winning the title. (Okay, so we're exaggerating a bit.)
But, seriously, when will there arise a real challenger to test Moses on and off the stage. At the EME, he also won Best Collaboration, and Song of the Year (Dancehall) and for Irie FM, he took home the popular Listener's Choice Award and Best Dressed Male, making it a total of six awards from two events - the most for any single artiste. We wait with bated breath to see what happens on Sunday at the Reggae Academy Awards.
Loads of talent on show at Jamaica Vibes at Weekenz Jamaica Vibes at Weekenz on Wednesdays is really stimulating.
The talent on display is something to write about. We went there for the first time two Wednesdays ago and caught Seretse Small, along with a few people out of his camp and, from the calibre of their performance, we had to ask when will the album be released. Special mention must be made of BiJean, who just blew us away. Last week, the talents on display included a really wicked keyboard player, Kamla Hamilton, who made it look as if the keys had a life of their own. Hats off to promoters DiFamli who are providing an outlet for young talent, and there is one stipulation - the content must be clean. Members of DiFamili are Shayne Morris, Jesse Golding, Trevor Thompson and Rachel Cunning. Telstar is a major sponsor. The show starts at 9:00 pm sharp each Wednesday.
