If everything goes according to plan, later this year Jamaican music lovers could be in for a very special treat with the staging of Reggae in Symphony. This, according to one of the featured acts, Freddie McGregor, who along with John Holt constitute the main attraction on the stellar event that highlight reggae's classical ingredients.
The first of two such gala concerts, highly ranked as "an evening of elegance" is set for Sunday, April 20 at the Broward Centre for the Performing Arts, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Started in London six years ago with the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Reggae in Symphony was last held in October 2007 at Brooklyn College, New York.
"We did it six years ago in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and we're going to do it in Florida now, and we're taking it to Jamaica next. The date we're looking at right now, tentatively is October 19," Freddie McGregor told Splash. At this black-tie affair which was premiered in 2004 to sold-out audiences at the London Hammersmith Apollo Theatre and in Birmingham, both John Holt and Freddie McGregor perform their well-known classics to strings, without losing their authentic indigenous flavour.
Last year's concert, featuring the New York Symphony Orchestra, was complemented by the added attraction of Lloyd Parks' We the People band with an extended horn section, with Jon Williams as conductor for the combined aggregations.
