Steele takes top honours at the RMAA

Thursday, June 12, 2008

Canadian reggae artiste Steele (left) accepts an award for Album/CD of the year from radio personality Richie B, who also receive an award for International Radio Disc Jockey of the year last Sunday. Steele walked away with three awards that night, making him the night's biggest winner.

Canadian reggae artiste, Steele, walked away with three awards at the recent Reggae Music Achievement Awards (RMAA), making him the night's big winner.

Held last Sunday at the Holiday Inn Select hotel in Toronto, Canada, Jamaica's radio personality, Richie B, who had earlier received the award for International Radio Disc Jockey of the year, had the pleasure of presenting Steele with the first of his three awards - Album/CD of the Year, The Love of Jah.

In his interview following the presentation, Richie B commented that "presenting Steele with the album of the year award was most fitting, since it was the first CD produced, recorded, and sung by an artiste residing in Canada to ever hit the Top Ten Album/CD Charts in Jamaica".

This was just the beginning for Steele. Before long he was once again recognised as Male Vocalist of the Year, and Artiste of the Year.

The Mobs Produced artiste has been consistent with his deliverance of good reggae music, and his contribution to the Canadian reggae industry has been clearly noticed by all.

Overwhelming applause greeted Steele each time he went to receive his award. Steele took time to thank his fans, his co-producer Ernie Tresfall of Reflex Music, and all media personnel around the world for their love and continued support of his work. He also thanked all who went online to vote for him, and finally, the awards committee that so professionally coordinated the event.

Steele later performed for his fans, and held nothing back in delivering an energy packed set with songs such as Another Confrontation, Breakfast in Bed and the ever spiritual Jah is My Strength.

The first annual Reggae Music Achievement Awards was the launch on June 10, 2007 in Toronto, Canada by founder reggae media veteran, Delroy Sterling. Sterling has been the host of the Mix Supreme Show on CHRY since 1995 and initiated the awards as a way to honour reggae/dancehall artistes for their accomplishments over the year.

The show focuses primarily on the Canadian reggae scene but does have categories acknowledging international achievements. The award show also honours reggae media (this includes radio personalities as well as online and printed magazines).

A release from the organisers states, "Unfortunately, the music industry in Canada does not give reggae the light it deserves. As a result, artistes in this genre have always thought it to be extremely difficult to garner any attention. That being said, a Reggae Music Achievement Awards Show is well received."
