Lee 'Scratch' Perry - the man of style and fashion
Musings

Monday, June 16, 2008

There are fashion icons, there are fashionistas and then there is the inimitable Lee 'Scratch' Perry. The elusive man himself slipped into the crowd at Caribbean Fashion Week but Pulse boss Kingsley Cooper announced that he was in the house. Of course, that meant that Scratch had to stand up so the enthusiastic patrons could actually see him and was later escorted on stage by Carolyn Cooper.

Lee 'Scratch' Perry

Notorious for his flamboyant style, Scratch didn't let us down and Spragga Benz and Scoffery remarked, "A him set the trend for Ele. Just look at the man, he must be Ele's grandfather."

As popular for his music as he is for his eccentricities, Lee Scratch is a reggae and dub artiste who has been highly influential in the development and acceptance of reggae and dub music in Jamaica and overseas. He is also known as Pipecock Jaxxon and The Upsetter.

In 2003, Scratch won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album with the album Jamaican ET. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Perry #100 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artistes of All Time.

More recently, he teamed up with a group of Swiss musicians and performed under the name Lee Perry and the White Belly Rats, and made a brief visit to the United States using the New York City based group Dub Is A Weapon as his backing band. Born Rainford Hugh Perry in Kendal, the 72-year-old Perry lives in Switzerland with his wife.
Welcome home, Scratch.
