Uptown Mondays sizzled last week when dub legend Lee 'Scratch' Perry made his grand entrance. Scratch aka The Upsetter was in town to shoot what was the first big budget music video of his entire career. According to Ashley, from Narnack Records, Perry's current label rep and publicist, he shot at quite a few locations around Kingston. The music video for the single Pum Pum was done by acclaimed Jamaican director, Jay Will. It is the first single from Scratch's new album, Repentance, due out August 26 on Narnack Records.
In the past year, Lee Scratch - who has not performed in Jamaica in a very long time - toured the US extensively with "one of the hardest working dub bands in the business", Dub as a Weapon. He is preparing to launch his next North American tour on June 30.
When asked if Scratch has any plans to perform in Jamaica soon, his publicist said, "They are working on something." So, let's keep our fingers crossed.
Reggae museum to be established
We understand that a reggae museum is in the works. Should we say long overdue? We won't. Instead, we will laud the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, for "spearheading the drive to set up a reggae museum to showcase the challenges and achievements of Jamaican music". Musicologist Herbie Miller - former manager for singer Peter Tosh - has been asked to assist the Ministry in setting up the museum.
Good news also is that an entertainment and cultural industries council is being established, with part of its mandate being to ensure that there is a Cultural Enhancement Fund, similar to the Tourism Enhancement Fund. "Every company that comes into Jamaica, that wishes to film an activity, will now have to ensure that a royalty comes to Jamaica from doing that film," Culture Minister Olivia
'Babsy' Grange says.
