EMC celebrates another successful year

Saturday, July 05, 2008

Chairman of EMC's Board of Directors, Paul Issa and Cecil Cooper.

Edna Manley College's final year showcase with the School of Visual Arts (SVA) Final Year Show had its staging at the end of June. The bon voyage was tied into the Kingston on the Edge (KOTE) celebration with visits to the exhibition sites, partly in the College's gallery and the display rooms in the SVA. The exhibition equated another successful year for SVA, not to mention a unique one.

In a release, the SVA noted that, "The magnitude of the exhibition is demonstrative of the enormous contributions made by our sponsors Carreras Ltd, Courts Jamaica Ltd, NCB Foundation, Pepsi-Cola Jamaica and Roca Wines of Argentina and Lascelles Wines and Spirits."

Representatives from Carreras Ltd made their visit to the closing and like many others were impressed with the outcome that resulted from four years of formal training. Others in attendance were chairman of EMC's Board of Directors, Paul Issa and his wife.

In addition to the outstanding level of productions from the graduating class, for the first time the college mounted a curatorial exhibition with selections of works presented for the examination. From this examination, research fellow and curator for the college, Veerle Poupeye and printing technician, Cleve Bowen, selected the finest pieces to be viewed in the reconstructed show rooms at the school and the CAG(e) gallery. The CAG(e) was made available and awarded to two deserving students, O'Dwayne Wilson and Patasha McLean. The show which opened with 52 artists included a welcoming ceremony on Saturday, June 7 with guest speaker, Margaret Bernal of Jamaica Artists Alliance. In her address, she highlighting the endless ways in which artists can use their skills.

"Today the steady growth of Jamaican tourism offers an excellent opportunity for graduates such as yourselves (coming from all the faculties of this school), to satisfy your . opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship offered in every parish across Jamaica," Bernal stated. Artists in the fields of Art education, jewellery, ceramics, fibre arts, visual communication, Illustration, sculpting, painting and the performing arts of dance, drama and music left the ceremony convinced that their efforts, even through education can "hasten literacy and enlightenment for the entire community" and nation.

The evening with KOTE, came to an end with a poetry fest by the Poetry Society held at the college's amphitheatre. Such showcase of talent gave a rewarding end to the college's end of year showcase.
