What Goes Around Comes Around is the latest film project from screenwriter/director Steve 'Tehut Nine' McAlpin. The film which examines love and relationships features appearances from dancehall personalities Flippa Mafia, Mavado, Ding Dong, KC Jockey and Florida-based sound system selector Supa Twitch.

What Goes Around Comes Around recently opened in select Caribbean communities across the United States, and based on reports, the film has been playing to sold-out audiences.

This column caught up with McAlpin and he expressed his pleasure at the reception that his third project has received so far.

Kevin Jackson: Did you expect the kind of response that the film has been getting?
Steve McAlpin: I didn't know what kind of response to expect. Writing and shooting the film was a labour of love and I just hoped that people would relate to the storyline favourably and so far they have.

KJ: What is the story behind the movie and how did the title come about?
SM: It's about relationships in varied forms and stages. We have father and sons, husband and wife, best friends, brother and brother, mother and daughter, girlfriend and boyfriend, each dealing with a plethora of issues that plague most relationships today. Some of the issues include insecurity, infidelity, betrayal, resentment, trust and promiscuity.

KJ: Where were the scenes shot?
SM: The film was shot in South Florida
KJ: What kind of budget did you work with this time around?
SM: The budget was much larger than my previous film Bashment. Without going into specifics it was well over US$100,000.

KJ: How did you go about selecting the cast?
SM: Most of the cast was chosen via casting call and was handled by my business partner Johnny Blacks of Johnny Blacks Entertainment.

KJ: What kind of challenges did you face while filming?
SM: We faced minor scheduling challenges along with few location mishaps that caused us to stumble but nothing that made us fall. Shooting the film was an all around fun and an exciting experience.

KJ: How did the death of Rraw Dawg affect the filming, and were his scenes retained in the final edit?
SM: Alton 'Rraw Dawg' Ashman was my friend. The day before he was senselessly gunned down in Washington DC, he left his suitcase and the keys to the car he was driving with me in Florida and told me he'd be back in two days. When I got the call that he was killed it shattered me. I didn't know what to do or think, because I just saw the guy the day before; spoke to him in the evening and it wasn't even a full 24 hours since I saw him. He was one of the first persons to invest in the film, so he was more than just an actor. He was and still is an executive producer. It changed everything, and I still don't understand it. I dedicated the film to his memory. He was a good person and we all miss him and pray for his family. I was fortunate to shoot two scenes with him, and although I had to reshoot one with the actor who replaced him, I put it back after the end credits so that people could see his version of the scene.

KJ: Have you negotiated worldwide distribution of the film and when will Jamaicans at home get to see it?

SM: We're still negotiating distribution. Jamaicans at home will get to see it hopefully sometime in late November or early December.
