Battle royal at Heineken Green Synergy finals
By Dave Lindo
Tuesday, October 07, 2008

It was truly a battle royal as DJ Jigga and DJ Rohan faced off in the finals of the Heineken Green Synergy for the Jamaica Championship last week.

The two provided top quality entertainment in front of a live studio audience which included Heineken's country manager Frederique Asberg, Heineken's brand manager Keri-Ann McKenzie and assistant brand manager Tannisha Miranda. Also present were top sound clash selector Ricky Trooper and another icon in the music fraternity, Copeland Forbes.

Veteran sound system owner, Jack Scorpio, sat in as the celebrity guest judge, joining resident judges Kurt Riley and Collin Hinds on the judges' panel.

The finals saw Jigga and Rohan battling away in four segments. First, there was a Retro segment where they played music of yesteryear, then A Get The Girl segment where they tried to win over a girl with their musical selections, a Freestyle segment where they are required to play music across the genres and the Tune-for-Tune segment.

In the retro segment DJ Rohan played a truly classic set. He kicked off playing some foundation music from Dennis Brown's Revolution and Love and Hate, to Half Pint's Greetings. Displaying some crisp mixing, he stepped up the pace with Super Cat's Under Pressure.
Rohan was on fire, and, with his slick speech backing his selections, he unleashed other 'big tunes' including Shabba Rank's Respect The Elders.

DJ Rohan then changed gear going into some hardcore dancehall music such as Terror Fabulous' Model Pon Yu One Time Man, Wife by Joseph Steppa among other popular hit songs in that era. He closed with some hard-hitting hip hop tracks.

Jigga, who as usual had the crowd behind him, wasn't as fast out of the blocks as Rohan but remained competitive throughout the first segment. He started off playing some popular dancehall songs such as Admiral Bailey's Jump Up, and Leroy Gibbons' Magic Moment.
Jigga stepped up the pace as he played Bounty Killer's Stucky and Beenie Man's Tell Me What You Need and World Dance. He finished his set playing more dancehall music.

For that round all the judges said that while Rohan did better, Jigga also did well.

The second segment which had the DJs playing music from across the genres saw DJ Rohan again having a dream start. He kicked off with a 'wicked' introduction and then after played Nas' You Can Hate Me Now. Displaying an array of tricks, DJ Rohan executed some tight mixing as he played songs such as Harry Toddler's Nuh Want Nuh Fren From Them and Demarco's Nuh Want Wi Reach Nuh Weh.

Jigga started his set playing some dance music and then went into some '70s Disco such as Ring My Bell. He then played some soca, music including Alison Hind's Want A Man To Ride Mi Rhythm and Collin Lucas' Dollar Wine.

Jigga then switched to Hip Hop with T-Pain's Shorty Get Low and finished his set with some popular dancehall music.

At the end of that segment Collin Hinds said, "Tonight is a very interesting play-off. DJ Rohan executed a well thought out and well-prepared set with some clean mixing."

He said that evidently Rohan studied his opponent's strength and worked on it. He said that Rohan was leading.

Jack Scorpio said that Rohan did his homework and it was amazing how he performed and also gave DJ Rohan the nod over Jigga.
Kurt Riley said that he was very surprised by Rohan because he didn't sound like that before. He added that Rohan's presentation of music was good and everything else was right.

The 'Get The Girl' segment was very interesting as Jigga and DJ Rohan pulled out all stops in winning over a girl from the audience by the name of Monique.

Rohan started off playing a classic from Gregory Abbot, Shake You Down; Jigga came up strong with Sizzla's Give Me Your Love.
Jigga without a doubt was in his comfort zone and matched Rohan with some hard selections. Being a more hardcore selector, Jigga 'took it to Rohan' in this segment.

Jigga bowled over Monique with songs such as Pressure's Love and Affection and Beres' She Loves Me Now. At the end of this segment it was evident that Jigga came out on top which was agreed on by all three judges.

In the final Tune For Tune segment Jigga once again ruled supreme out-talking DJ Rohan as he unleashed some hard-hitting selections.

According to judge Collin Hinds, Jigga, who was the more aggressive, was the winner for this round. He cautioned, however, that voters must consider the nature of the competition in regards to what is required of the DJs, that when voting. They should think who will represent Jamaica better in the Group Finals.

Kurt and Jack Scorpio also gave Jigga the Tune-for-Tune segment.

The winner of the Jamaica finals will be announced at the Group Finals this Saturday, October 11, at the Chinese Benevolent Association Centre. The winner will go up against the Green Synergy winners from the Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, the US Virgin Islands, Belize and Bahamas.

The top two from the group finals will advance to the Regional Finals which will be held in Curacao on October 25.

To vote for DJ Rohan text the number 1 to 444-6935 or 444- MYDJ or for DJ Jigga text the number 15 to 444-6935 or 444-MYDJ.
