Stars 'R' Us remembers Alton Ellis with sons Noel and Christopher
Basil Walters, Observer staff reporter
Friday, November 07, 2008

Since Alton Ellis' passing, the first major musical event in his memory is slated for tomorrow at the Mas Camp in New Kingston. This Golden Promotions' stage show, with the theme 'Stars 'R' Us remembers Alton Ellis', will provide an opportunity for his adoring fans to see the capable hands or voices, if you don't mind, in which his musical legacy is entrusted.

For apart from the impressive list of some of Alton Ellis' contemporaries who will be honouring his memory on a show that he made numerous memorable appearances, his two sons left to carry the baton, Noel and Christopher, will be special guest artistes. Those who were in attendance at their father's celebratory farewell service at the St Andrew's Scots Kirk United Church on Monday got a glimpse of the frenzy those two can create performing their father's songs.

The rest of the line-up will feature such pioneers as the revered ska master Derrick Morgan; Ken Boothe who even while his departed colleague was highly regarded as the Godfather of Rock Steady, has been called Mr Rock Steady; Leroy Sibbles, Jimmy Riley, Ernie Smith, Pam Hall and the lone deejay on the bill Jah Thomas.

From a newer breed of artistes will be the sensational Glen Washington and the fast-rising Nicky Dillon. All acts will be supported on the bandstand by Lloyd Parks and We the People aggregation. There will be Alton Ellis recorded music all night provided by Roy Black of KLAS FM 89. Irie FM's Bob Clarke will be the master of ceremonies for the event from which part proceeds will go towards Food For The Poor for assistance to flood victims.
