He started out as a reggae artiste. He then switched gears to calypso music and later on wrote songs for a number of Caribbean artistes including Alison Hinds. Today he is one of soca music's brightest stars.
Peter Ram describes his music as ragga soca. "I started out back home in Barbados doing reggae music. I grew up listening to people like King Yellow Man and Toyan. I then switched over to calypso and social commentary," Peter Ram said in an interview on the set of his music video Tight. The video for Tight was shot in sections of Kingston on Tuesday under the direction of Jay Will.
Ram, whose real name is Peter Wiggins, is a household name in his native Barbados, as well as in several Caribbean territories. In the mid-1980s he jumpstarted his music career as a disc jock, playing at street jams and parties. Once dubbed Mr Freestyle, he recorded the song Rats which placed him in the finals of the Barbados 2001 Party Monarch competition.
He describes the musical journey as a good one. "The journey has been a good one, but before the journey I have to give thanks to my management at Pyramid Entertainment for the wonderful work that they have been doing," he said.
Ram has written songs for several artistes including hits such as Top Class Bubbla, Get Ready to Wine, Do As Ya Want, Confidence and Fireworks for Alison Hinds.
He is known mainly for the massive soca hit Woman By My Side, which he later followed up with the song Pumpin that registered on several soca charts across the Caribbean.
In 2005, Ram decided to flex his artistic muscles when he appeared in his first feature film Tek Dem Out. He recently appeared in the teen flick Hush, a film that deals with abortion, teenage pregnancy and abstinence. The film, which was shown in more than 18 schools across Barbados, recently saw its premiere here in Jamaica. It was written by Jamaican-born Marcia Weekes.
"I never thought that the movie Hush would've gotten that far. I got the role after Marcia called me up and said she wanted me to play the role of the man on the corner who offers positive messages to the youths," Ram explained. Ram is also the face and voice behind Barbadian sports brand retail outlet, Total Sport.
Peter Ram has collaborated with Jamaican artistes Vybz Kartel, Aidonia and Elephant Man. A remix of Woman by My Side featured Kartel while Aidonia threw his chops into the remix of the track Pumpin. He also collaborated with the late deejay Dirtsman.
"Dirtsman was the first Jamaican artiste that I worked with and it was a great experience. Another artiste I would really like to work with is Mavado," said Ram.
