5. Spice
Rampin' Shop was a great way for Spice to close the year. And amidst all the baby-father-jail-drama, 'S-P-I-C-E that's me' managed to keep herself current, at least enough to get a spot on this list.
4. Queen Ifrica
Queen's musical styling is clearly a case of culture meets commentary. much of her material was released in 2007, but really gained momentum last year. There was Daddy Don't Touch Me There and sexually tinged Below The Waist that were stand alone favourites this year.
3. D'Angel
She's the attractive ex-girlfriend of Bounty Killer-cum-estranged wife of Beenie Man who few would give a chance on stage. But in 2008 she fought adversity to become one of the more visible figures on the dancehall scene when she presented Stronger, which spoke to her resilience.
2. Etana
We watched Etana's transi-tion from mere cultural artiste to a strong and stylish vocal powerhouse who doesn't let her faith compromise her need to channel sultry and sexy. What's more, her album. The Strong One, might very well be the year's best listen. and with tracks like Warrior Love, Roots, Caltariba System et al it's not hard to see why.
1. Lady Saw
Many have challenged the crown, but in 2008 Lady Saw proved to them all why she's queen of the pack. She kept dancehall fans entertained from Sunday To Sunday (last year's 'walk out' tune . she released Jealous on Leftside's
Benny Hill riddim and the recent hit Bad Man Goin' Cry (an answer to Shaggy's Bad Man Don't Cry).
