Dress my. athletic body

Rock the Cloth

Saturday, June 27, 2009

Fitness, or among some - wellness - is becoming increasingly popular. And so now as more women do weight training, it's not only athletes who possess muscular, well-toned bodies.

As beautiful as it is, it may at times be challenging to dress the athletic body, which is characterised by a muscular appearance. In other words, the well-defined muscles create a taut body, and skin that highlights the curves and form of the body.

Key areas of the body where this is noticed are:

. Shoulders
. Upper arm
. Back
. Thighs
. Calves
. Abdominals

These are some of the areas you may wish to flaunt or hide. Dressing your athletic body is really about whether you want to hide or flaunt particular areas.

To Flatter or Flaunt.

Curved construction that flows over the body's curve works well; as do medium- drape fabrics. To really highlight the curves, fluid fabrics work well. The following are some obvious styles to flaunt the well-toned body:

. Sleeveless or short sleeves
. Backless or halter styles
. Shorts
. Pencil skirts
. Form-fitting clothing.

To Cover or Hide.

Straight lines may not flow with the form, and will work to hide some areas. Structured clothing with straight construction lines (with the appropriate fit) will not highlight the muscular form, and the following are good to cover up:

. Tailored jacket in a fitted style
. Wide-leg trousers
. Long sleeves

Being athletic or muscular is only about the line of your body and does not have to do with your silhouette, which, as we mentioned last week, is either neat or full hourglass, pear or triangle, inverted triangle, or lean column (rectangle).

But the advantage is that it can help camouflage flaws or enhance assets, which gives you more options in clothing selection. So, still choose styles that flatter your shape. The tips above are only about the tone of the body, so be careful about applying the rules for your body type as well.

For Olympian Aleen Bailey, home for the Nationals, we highlighted her shoulders, arms and calves with an asymmetrical off-the-shoulder dress, a form-fitting sleeveless dress and a fitted pencil skirt.
