The seduction of Orchids

Gardening

Sunday, November 01, 2009

There is hardly another plant, or flower for that matter, that has been able to capture one's attention and evoke emotions the way orchids do. Gardeners like Errol Simmonds have not escaped the seduction of these blooms.

Simmonds, a garage operator-cum-gardener explains that he is an orchid enthusiast at heart. His affinity for orchids dates back 34 years and is evident in his front yard. Though he houses flora of all kinds (the hibiscus, crown-of-thorn and the miniature rose included), Simmonds laughs as he describes his special love for the orchid.

"Orchids are beautiful plants, and they can brighten up any room or garden with their graceful stems and bright, colourful flowers."

Growing orchids can be a delicate process. The different colours, shapes, sizes and fragrances make them an enchanting species to grow and collect, although some may have particular growing requirements.

While there are more than 18,000 species of orchids, most will do well in varying environments, from light shade to bright light. This makes them more versatile as both indoor and outdoor plants. Simmonds leaves us with his best tip for plant care, "You have to love plants," he says. "If you don't, you probably won't take good care of them."
