Last weekend's Motor Show at Police Officers' Club on Hope Road in Kingston brought out viewers in droves, young and old, curious to see what's on offer in the tight car market.

But in the mix were also serious purchasers who, according to reports, bought at least 55 cars over the two days.

"Overwhelming, it surpassed everybody's expectation," show organiser Ian Lyn told Auto.

According to Lyn, despite the threats of rain more than 1,800 patrons turned out for the show that highlighted vehicles from some 11 auto-dealers.

Lyn's estimate is that dealers sold an average of five vehicles over the two-day car show. "That is a conservative figure," he remarked, adding that commercial banks and credit unions processed loans on the spot, thanks to Wi-Fi at the venue.

But not all the vehicles on show were for sale.

For instance, the centrepiece of the show, a Bentley Continental GT, drew wide-eyed stares and exclamations of awe on hearing the price tag, were it to be sold new.

"A car like this would cost approximately $58 million new, if it is imported now," owner Tarik Maliq told Auto.

The stately Bentley GT, the only one of its kind in the island, packs serious punch. It has a 6000cc, W12 engine (as in V6 or V8) and speeds off from zero to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds. Top speed for the luxury/sports car is a dizzying 198mph.

Coming to a halt is also ensured with an oversized disc brake system.

"The Bentley GT has by far the largest disc brake rotors on any production car," shared Malik who operates Carland Auto.

The Bentley aside, Malik said that he is pleased with the overall response to the show. "There are many people who were interested, we sold some vehicles too," he commented.

According to Lyn, the show will next be staged in Montego Bay at the end of the month.
