My Kingston

Nicholas Lynch
General Manager, Strawberry Hill

What are your earliest memories of Kingston?
Rolling around my parents' backyard in a wheelbarrow. Climbing a huge otaheiti apple tree in Golden Spring and not knowing exactly how to climb back down.

What do you miss when you are not in Kingston?
When I'm out of the country, I miss the mountains. Kingston has a magical beauty that's hard to find elsewhere. My extended family also has its roots here in Kingston and there's nothing like spending quality time with my parents and my in-laws (yes, I really do like them).

What are your favourite home comforts?
The couch, cable television, and a good remote control.

What would you do if you were mayor (of Kingston) for a day?
As I'm sure our current mayor Mr McKenzie knows, a single day isn't enough to enact significant change across the entire city. I would hope, however, that I would be able to make a really significant impact on the lives of a select few. I'm sure that I'm not alone in feeling that those efforts might best be directed at the youngest Kingstonians.

Share with us the title of the last book you read.
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - I've read it a few times. It's got everything you could want in a novel. mystery, romance, intrigue, betrayal, revenge and redemption.

What's your middle name?
Charles.

And the last bit of music that stirred your soul?
Classical: Corcovado by Antonio Carlos Jobim
Contemporary: How Much Longer by Rootz Underground
Cool: Bob Marley/Marvin Gaye remix of Sexual Healing.

What was your last bit of retail therapy?
I have an eight-month-old daughter, so my retail therapy's not what it used to be, although it's still somewhat satisfying.

Which cologne are you currently splashing?
Terre d'Hermès. It's absolutely amazing.

What is your preferred beverage?
A freezing cold Red Stripe or an Oban Single Malt Scotch on the rocks with a small splash of water.

What has been your most memorable meal at Strawberry Hill?
The most memorable meals are those that are consumed by others. A pair of guests recently extended their stay at Strawberry Hill for an additional night so that they could have a chance to order our rack of lamb a second time. They said that it was even better the second night.

What upsets you?
Jamaica has so much to offer - and we've made significant global contributions that are disproportionate to a nation of our size. I'd like us to be as successful economically as we have been culturally and it upsets me that we haven't managed to execute a sustainable plan to achieve that ideal.

Name your three favourite 'chill' spots?
1. The Strawberry Hill pool
deck at sunset.
2. Any hammock with my wife in it.
3. My parents' back verandah.

What's your advice to a first-time visitor to Kingston?
This is the New York of the Caribbean. There's so much more to do than you think and there's no better way to see it than through the eyes of a Kingstonian. So find yourself a 'yardie' to show you his or her favourite spots and give you a true taste of Kingston.

What's your philosophy?
Be balanced - enjoy it all.
