Chichibud expands grief therapy initiative

Monday, October 25, 2004

Chichibud Ltd, the Jamaican NGO that deals with children's welfare issues, has developed a series of bereavement therapy resource books, as an extension of a programme it started three years ago to help children affected by violence.

The bereavement therapy programme, called Soul Power, includes workshops for guidance counsellors and an annual summer camp for children. The resource book, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Jamaica, includes titles such as 'Helping Children and Teens Cope with Death' and '35 ways to help Grieving Children'.

The books, along with a flyer listing tips for working and living with grieving children, was compiled by Chichibud's director, Professor Rebecca Tortello. They are being distributed to education ministry's Guidance Counselling, libraries and teachers colleges.

Chichibud says it hopes, by its activities, to help raise awareness of this crucial mental health issue. The next step is to provide additional resources to institutions in the form of picture books dealing with grief that children can read on their own as well as with their teachers/parents.
