Help! My bikini line is ruined
Dr Sharmaine Mitchell
Monday, May 16, 2005

Dear Doc,

Ever since I started to shave my bikini line, I noticed that after each shave the area is tender and I have some very unsightly razor bumps. I have tried to use a depilatory cream hoping that this would solve the problem. However, after using it for a while the bumps are still there. Because of the bumps I have never been able to wear a two piece bikini bathing suit. The summer is coming up and my friends and I are planning a Negril getaway. I really want to surprise everybody. What can I do to completely remove the bumps and any spots that may remain?

Dear Distraught,

The problem that you are experiencing with shaving of the pubic hair is a common problem, not only in women but in men too, who shave their beards. In the short term you should try to shave more frequently, possibly alternate days and change your razors more often. Razors should be washed thoroughly with soap and water to prevent the hair follicles from becoming infected. A sharp, clean razor and the use of a shaving cream will also allow for a smooth clean shave and reduce razor bumps.

Long term, the use of electrolysis or laser to remove the pubic hair may be worth trying. This is definitely more expensive but gives more lasting results. The spots may be reduced by the application of a fading cream. Triluna is effective in reducing hyper-pigmented spots. These creams should not be allowed to go into the vagina as this may cause irritation and a chemical vaginitis. Consult your Dermatologist who will give you more advice on this matter.

Have fun at your Negril getaway but also remember abstinence is ideal or use a condom all the time. You can't tell by looking that someone is HIV positive. Safe sex or no sex.
