Dear Dr. Sharmaine,
My husband and I have been trying to have a baby for about two years now and someone has just told me that it's because I'm too fat. I know I'm overweight - I'm 5' 3" and weigh 192 lbs - but I've seen fatter than me have a baby without problems. Is it true though, am I too fat to have a baby?
Answer
The ideal weight that you should be is approximately 135 pounds at 5feet 3inches, so you are somewhat overweight by approximately 57 pounds. Being overweight does not prevent you from becoming pregnant. However, there is a condition called polycystic ovarian disease which is associated with excessive weight gain, hirsutism (excessive hair growth on the face and body), difficulty getting pregnant and irregular periods. The underlying problem is that patients with this condition usually do not ovulate frequently. Polycystic ovarian disease is also associated with an increased risk for diabetes mellitus because of a resistance to insulin which is produced by the body.
The fact that you have been trying to conceive for two years without success is significant. You should have a detailed examination and investigations done to determine the cause of your inability to conceive. Other factors that may contribute to infertility include blocked tubes, hormonal imbalance such as elevated prolactin level or problems with the thyroid gland. The problem may actually be due to your husband, so he will also need to be examined and investigated. Male factors contribute to infertility in up to 40-50% of couples. You should make every effort to lose some weight before becoming pregnant. This will reduce your risk of developing diabetes and hypertension in pregnancy.
Consider going on a diet which has less carbohydrate and fat and do some exercise. Consider enrolling in an exercise programme and if this is not possible, then brisk walking is good, especially if done at least three to four times per week. Consult your gynaecologist who will advise you further. Best wishes.
