3 minutes with Alicia Keys

Monday, July 17, 2006

Alicia Keys is being styled, made up and her tresses fluffed to perfection. There really isn't much time for the cosy sit down. But the five-time Grammy winner is as gracious as can be and apologises that we have to kind of rock 'n roll.

NMW: How do you feel about being in Kingston, Jamaica?
Alicia Keys: I am very excited about being in Kingston. It is in fact my first visit as I was in Montego Bay the last time and didn't make it over and so when the negotiations were complete and we found out in New York that we were coming to Kingston we were excited and yesterday (at Sherlock Crescent - Cham's home) was amazing. The love was for real and it felt so good and I felt very comfortable. very much at home. So I love it and I have very fond memories of it. I feel a connection of sorts.

NMW: Share with us some of your style tips and by the way, we gather you saw today's (Tuesday's) Observer Page 2 and really loved it.
Alicia Keys: I saw it, thank you and it looks great. My look is thanks to Ashunta Sheriff, my make-up artist. But I like to be relaxed. I like to be in an environment that I'm comfortable in and usually that is some place with people that I am comfortable with and that's why I use the people that I've known for years.. Like all these people that are with me now. The hair and make-up team, all of them I've known for years and we have a certain understanding that comes with that and out of that comes a certain comfort level.

NMW: And how does Alicia Keys relax after a hectic shoot?
Alicia Keys: I like a lot of candles as well as a lot of incense. I like my scent. I like places that smell good, I feel like it adds a good song for me.

NMW: What's your favourite scent right now?
Alicia Keys: It's Miss Scherie by Dior as well as Brown Sugar.

Alicia Keys draws appreciative stares from bystanders on Hanover Street during the second day of shooting the video for Ghetto Story Remix.
