| Crochet queen, Minka |
Minka the crochet queen speaks to a new found contentment. "Once upon a time it was all about designing and making ends meet.I was just being creative and burning myself out, now I'm much more businesslike." It's no idle boast. all woman catches up with a new Minka, a woman who is a lot more confident and focused. Minka is excited about her just completed production course at Carimac as well as the degree she's pursuing in Fashion Merchandising (via correspondence) with the Professional Career Development Institute in Georgia, USA.
"When that's over I'm going to the University of Technology (UTECH) to do a business degree," she said. At 26, Minka is finally getting serious about her crochet skills. "I was forced to," she opines. "My last huge project truly tested my resolve, I even learned how to delegate, something I could never do and had to really focus on both production and finish. I didn't sleep for three nights."
Minka is speaking to the 32 swimsuits representing 10 Caribbean countries commissioned by bmobile for Machel Montano's Dance With You video featuring Mr. Vegas. "I had exactly nine days to complete the order," she shares. "They gave me the deposit and really expressed faith in my ability to create exactly what they wanted. They wanted 32 swimsuits with the flags created from crochet stitches. It was in fact my idea to crochet the flag as part of the swimsuit, they had wanted the flags to be stuck on to the swimsuits." And so Minka set to work with a team of four, 150 balls of crochet threads (in 10 colours) and delivered swimsuits that are as memorable as Trini Machel Montano turning NYC into his dance floor.
