10 things every father should teach his daughter

Monday, June 16, 2008

IT'S important that fathers teach their daughters a few key things to help them become good women. These include:

1. Teach her about her own beauty.
A father plays an important role in the way a daughter feels about herself. He can build her self-esteem or destroy it! By letting her know how beautiful she is inside and out will make a big difference in building her confidence.

2.Teach her the importance of education and independence.
A father should encourage his daughter to get as much education as possible, thus making her independent.

3.Teach her about boys/men.
A father should be honest with his daughter about boys and men. As a man and a father, he can teach her about mutual friendships, relationships, sex, love and even the tricks men tend to play on women in order to woo them. He should teach her how to spot a good man a mile away and how to know when she is getting the runaround. However, he has to be balanced in his teachings in order not to make her afraid of men.

4. Teach her how a man is supposed to treat a lady.
Live by example. He should take his daughter out on father-daughter dates. He should show her how men are supposed to treat women and vice-versa. Dress up and go to places like the movies, dinner, museums or just cook a meal for two at home. Show her free and low cost ways to have fun so that she doesn't associate a good time with money. Things like walks in the park, picnics and watching a movie on TV are just as fun as a night on the town. Dress appropriately and open doors for her. Use live examples of how men and women should and shouldn't act towards each other.

5. Teach her how to be strong within herself.
Tell her how much he loves and is proud of her on a constant basis. Reinforce in her the strength of self. Keep her confident in her abilities while not allowing her to become arrogant. Teach her that inner strength is more important than outer. Show her strength that is mental, emotional and spiritual. Teach her the value of being social and being in solitude. Allow her to express herself when she is happy or sad without being afraid.

6. Teach her not to accept abuse as 'the norm'.
Teach her that to be battered by her spouse is wrong and should not be accepted as something a man does out of love. Teach her not to accept just about anyone that is dished out to her but to settle for nothing less than the best for herself. Show her how to defend herself physically and verbally. Show her when to walk or run away. Show her when and how to fight back.

7. Show her how to check the oil and change a tyre.
Teach her things that are normally taught to boys. Instil in her that she is capable of doing anything she sets her mind to do. This includes changing car oil and tyre. Teach her how to use tools and fix a faucet. It will liberate her and make her feel stronger (this is also a bonding experience that will also give you a second set of hands around the home!).

8. Teach her to save.
Help improve your daughter's life by teaching her about earning, saving and investing her money. Instil in her the power of being financially independent from an early age. Show her how to pay bills and how to avoid enslavement by debt.

9. Teach her the difference between a sexual advance and a friendly advance
It is important that girls know the difference. They will then be able to decide which advances to reject and which to accept.

10. Teach her the value of sex
If girls learn from their fathers the boundaries and values surrounding sex, they will not be tempted to have sex loosely, but will instead preserve their bodies for the right time.
