3-day conference to teach life skills

IN the midst of despair is great hope as scores of high school girls from across Jamaica will be among hundreds of women who will be coached into identifying and understanding their unique design and purpose in life, as they seek a sense of direction in these challenging times.

At a three-day conference dubbed HOPE Jamaica 2009 to be held on May 1 -3, the women and girls will be challenged to live life with passion, gratitude and joy and to pass this on to others.

Conference organiser Pastor Jasmine 'Melody' Miller explained that they are hoping to have scores of high school girls at the Fellowship Tabernacle auditorium in Kingston on day one of the conference.

"We are concerned with what is happening in schools and so we want the girls exposed to this sort of training so they can pursue life with intent and purpose," Miller told All Woman.

She added that they want to send a message to these girls that they do not have to succumb to all the negativity that is happening around them.

Miller explained that they have already sent out several invitations to schools islandwide and the response has been favourable so far.

Meanwhile, Miller said the conference, which will cater to all age groups and demographics of women, is timely and relevant given the current times of hopelessness and despair.

"This will remind women that they don't have to look to externals to satisfy them but to identify what potentials are on their inside," Miller said.

The HOPE Jamaica 2009 conference is being held in collaboration with Hopelyn International, an organisation formed to instil hope in the minds of people and the Life Purpose Coaching Centres, International.

Miller said the conference will, among other things, encourage women to approach life's difficulties as there are so many women who do not know what to make of life.

"Many women are asking what is my purpose and why am I dissatisfied with what I am doing and not getting any fulfilment," Miller said.

She said the life coaches at the seminars and workshops will allow them to recognise that God intends for them to live their life with zeal, passion and excitement about facing every day.

This, she added, can only happen when one understands the purpose of their life.

She made it clear that the conference, while based on biblical principles, is not only seeking to target Christians but just about every young woman and girl.

"What we are seeing affects a lot of different women and this has resulted in some women being superficial as they attempt to create enjoyment and discontent as they try to fill a void," Miller said

Hopelyn International, with founder Jamaican-born Dr Hopelyn Brown who now resides in Canada, focuses specifically on helping women understand their purpose and inspire hope in them.

Miller explained that she will be bringing with her five other life purpose coaches from the United States and Canada who are trained to facilitate this process.

The greater part of the conference, according to Miller, will be practical. The Friday session will also cater mainly to female leaders who will participate in panel discussions and life coaching demonstrations.

Saturday will take the form of a plenary session followed by breakout sessions which will be repeated in the afternoon. Leading one of these sessions will be Custos of St Catherine Pastor Sophia Azan

On Sunday evening the conference will conclude at the Fellowship Tabernacle auditorium on Ward Avenue in Mandeville.

Dr Brown, on her website, noted that the long-range vision of the Hope Jamaica team will be to train and certify coaches through Life Purpose Coaching Centres International, for the establishment of the first Life Purpose Coaching Centre in Kingston.

She said that Life Purpose Coach and Facilitator training will be offered for those interested in becoming Life Purpose Coaches. Future plans include Levels 1, 2, and 3 certification training on-site both in Jamaica and in the US.
