"PEOPLE said I was crazy when I started home-schooling my son," says author and home-schooling pioneer Barbara Blake Hannah. They changed their opinion when her son was appointed youth technology consultant to the Jamaican government in 1998 at age 13, and was labelled a 'genius' without having experienced a traditional education.
After years of answering questions about her home-schooling techniques, Blake Hannah has published an account of her experiences as a guide book for parents interested in following her example. Home - The First School: A Homeschooling Guide to Early Childhood Education is a 160-page book with chapters on the Montessori method, the computer as teacher, daily lesson plans, unschooling vs home-schooling, college and the positive benefits of breastfeeding in raising bright children.
Home-schooling takes place when parents choose to become their children's teacher at home, rather than have them in a classroom with several other children of the same age. Around the world parents disappointed in the results of traditional education are choosing the home-schooling option and finding that it produces better educated students, while giving parents the opportunity to identify and expand their child's interest in a particular subject or skill.
Blake Hannah's book recounts her methodology, guides parents to international home-schooling experts and offers website links and contacts for those seeking further information. Home - The First School has been published with a grant from the CHASE Fund and is distributed by Novelty Trading Co to bookshops and pharmacies across Jamaica.
