BML building local fibre optic ring for Digicel
Observer Reporter
Wednesday, June 15, 2005

Digicel Jamaica is building a fibre optic ring that will link its main site on Balmoral Avenue directly to its headquarters in New Kingston.

According to Business Observer sources, the ring will connect the fibre optic cable ring to three major sites - its sites on Dumfries, the RKA building in New Kingston and Balmoral Avenue.

The ring will enable Digicel to take its main service from Balmoral and trunk it to New Kingston, "to pass data and voice through a 96 core fibre backbone," according to sources.

Digicel, which has the lion's share of the 1.8 million cellular users estimated in Jamaica alone, was contacted but did not provide any comments up to press time yesterday.

The installation should commence within the next few weeks and was contracted out to Business Management Limited - a provider of data service and telephony equipment.
