Motorola to challenge Blackberry with its new 'Q' phone
Observer Business Reporter
Friday, August 05, 2005

The Blackberry mobile telephone handset has become very popular with professionals throughout the Caribbean. For those who require instant access to the Internet while on the go it is de rigueur.

Now Motorola, the company that brought you the ultra- thin RAZR is set to challenge Blackberry's dominance with the 'Q'.

The 'Q' is made by Schaumburg, and Microsoft provides its operating system. It allows users to access the Internet and receive and send e-mails from a number of third - party systems.

This latest cell phone is so thin that you can place it in your wallet with your credit cards and still have room for cash. It is half-an-inch thick and 50 per cent slimmer than its competitors. It has a hidden antenna and luminescent keys.

"The 'Q' is going to be a real hit around the world, especially in emerging markets," said chief executive officer Ed Zander in an interview on an American cable news network show.

Over the last few years Motorola has lagged behind its more notable competitors, namely Nokia and Samsung, but has repositioned itself by branding its latest products as hip and trendy lifestyle accessories.

Motorola has already unveiled its new sunglasses from Oakley, which has a Bluetooth wireless chip and earpiece. This must- have eyewear retails for around US$295. What do you get for that, you may ask? Well, the chip connects to the wearer's cellphone and lets a user answer calls or adjust the volume by touching buttons on their sunglasses. It will not be long now before Motorola users can access Yahoo services and hear the latest tunes through its iRadio device. This means that via broadband, Motorola users can tune into Internet radio and MP3 files.

Motorola is the world's second largest cell phone handset company with about 20 per cent of the market. Nokia leads the way with a 33 per cent market share.
The 'Q' goes on sale in spring of next year.
