Venezuela's Chavez announces 15 per cent hike in minimum wage

CARACAS, (AP) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced a 15-per cent hike in the minimum wage yesterday.

"Starting from yesterday, we increase the minimum wage by 15 per cent," Chavez said during the televised celebration of his seven years in office.

He also increased the minimum wage last year. The latest increase brings the minimum wage to about 466,000 bolivars (US$217;euro180) a month.
