A new cash remittance service between Guyana and the United States is scheduled to come on stream by the end of the month, according to an official of the Guyana Post Office Corporation.
Post Cash, a remittance service that will be offered by the Guyana Post Office Corporation, will enable Guyanese to receive remittances from the United States and other territories through the local postal service.
A money transfer agreement was signed between the GPOC and MAP Cash of the United States some time ago and according to the Corporation's Marketing, Sales and Enhanced Services Manager Howard Lorimer the service will come into effect immediately after it is formally launched. Users of the new Post Cash facility will be able to access money sent to them from overseas by "swiping" an access card issued by the postal service at a computerised terminal provided by the GPOC. The computer will provide both the customer and the Post Office teller with information regarding the amount of money being held in the customer's "account".
The new system will allow the customer to withdraw any amount from the account and to retain the remainder for later. According to Lorimer the arrangement between the GPOC and MAP Cash requires the postal service to set up a local bank account into which Map Cash will deposit funds to be used for paying customers in Guyana.
The GPOC will receive a commission for providing the service. The new Post Cash service will be available at the GPO building, the Bourda Post Office and the New Amsterdam Post Office in the first instance.
