Alumina and bauxite production fell during the March quarter, according to data on production of selected commodities issued by the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ).
According to the statistics, the production of alumina and crude bauxite extracted for export fell 4.2 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively, during the first three months of 2008 when compared to the corresponding period in 2007.
The decline follows a fall-off in bauxite and alumina output in 2007 when two per cent less bauxite and 3.9 per cent less alumina than the previous year.
But last year approximately 108,000 tonnes of alumina production was lost during August when Hurricane Dean caused minor damage to facilities. The most significant destruction - 75 per cent - occurred at Jamalco's port at Rocky Point, which required temporary logistical support from WINDALCO.
The industry still faces the challenge of rising input costs, particularly for energy and caustic soda, in part reflecting pass through adjustment for a declining US dollar in which prices for these commodities are denominated.
