PRIME Minister Bruce Golding says the national parenting policy which is being established by the government will be supported by legislation that establishes a national parenting commission with particular responsibilities. But Golding said that this will not be the solution to our challenges, but a tool which will be useful in trying to address the problems that impact on parenting and child care.
'So much of what we do through the Child Development Agency and through the other initiatives that government takes is actually trying to rescue that child after that child has found itself in distress or despair and then the focus is to see how we can correct a problem that has been created. We need to bring about a whole new shift," Golding said.

He was addressing the Caribbean Child Research Conference at the Pegasus hotel in Kingston Wednesday under the theme 'Global Crisis; the Impact on our children'.
The annual Caribbean Child research Conference is a regional event covering a wide range of child-related themes. It was presented by the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic studies in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the University of the West Indies, the various government-run children's agencies and the Ministry of Education.
One of the objectives of the conference is to promote a culture of research among students in the high schools by facilitating the presentation of their research by students. The conference facilitates participation by children through attendance, presentations and the selection of an outstanding child researcher.
