The Jamaican Folk Singers, a non-profit singing group, was founded in 1967 by Dr Olive Lewin, and it continues to strive to maintain the highest standards of performance, supported largely by discipline and dedication to the group's mandate. Educating though entertainment, the group provides leadership and training among youth clubs, churches, senior citizens and Sunday school groups.

The main objectives of the Jamaican Folk Singers include: unearthing and exposing the artistic worth of Jamaica's musical heritage; keeping alive the folk foundations of Jamaica's music, with music, movement and mime presentations that are artistically acceptable, while retaining the integrity of the source and maintaining active contact with the keepers of our culture.

This island tour represents the group's initiative to help uplift Jamaica, using our music and recollecting a time of love, respect and honour, which the members believe is not lost, and can be reignited. Through music, the values of "old Jamaica" - respect for self and others, being polite, disciplined, and overall, loving our neighbours as ourselves, the group intends to continue positively influencing people across Jamaica. In its travels at home and abroad, the group has found that folk music can transcend social and economic barriers and encourage respect and understanding among people of different backgrounds.

This tour started in June 2009 with performances in downtown Kingston, Port Royal and Portmore, and to date, the group has toured St Catherine, Clarendon, St Ann, St James, Trelawny and Hanover. All the performances on the tour are free, as the aim is to share with the people of Jamaica the richness of our musical heritage.

On Saturday, October 10 the group will be performing in Yallahs Square from 11:00am to 1:00pm and then on West Street, Morant Bay from 2:00pm - 3:00pm. On Sunday, October 11, the group will present a concert at Hope Gardens at 4:00pm.

There will be a special performance by the Jamaican Folk Singers at Mother's, Liguanea. All are invited to share with the group as the Jamaican Folk Singers dedicates this year to giving back to Jamaica and its people. sharing and learning together, as we celebrate the people who have unfailingly helped to keep our folk traditions alive.
