10 WAYS TO CUT YOUR SUPERMARKET BILL

Thursday, May 01, 2008

1. Grow provisions and vegetables in your backyard - it is not quite World War I, but planting a few items round back can help to reduce your food bill.

2 Plan a weekly menu to avoid purchases that you do not need.

3 Divide your shopping - dry foods and household cleaners at the supermarket, meat at the butcher and vegetables at the market.

4. Choose the items that are harder to reach as the highest marked-up items are always at eye level.

5. Buy generic brands.

6. Buy local brands - they are always cheaper than imported ones.

7. Avoid food shopping when you are hungry - you will buy more.

8. Compare supermarkets - shop around before settling on one supermarket.

9. Ever noticed that vegetarian items tend to be cheaper on restaurant menus? Substitute meat with grains and beans and save on your food bill.

10. Never throw away leftovers. You will be surprised what can be used towards another meal.
