Colleges recruiting chess players

to enhance academic reputations

WELCOME back! Thought I'd share this quote with you before I start: "A man ceases to be a beginner and becomes a master when he realises he'll be a beginner all his life!" Thought provoking, huh? Anyway, lets' go!

Of course as promised we'll start off with 114 CHESS then right in to today's lesson.

In today's 114 CHESS

* News on Jamaica Chess Federation Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Awards Ceremony

* Master's Knockout Conclusion

* Liguanea Chess Club puts off moving

* USA colleges recruit chess players (What's up, Jamaica?)

New date for Annual General Meeting

So... last week I told you about the Jamaica Chess Federation's Award Ceremony and the fact that rain forced a postponement. Well, I didn't tell you when it's rescheduled to. No prob! The new date for the AGM & Award Ceremony is June 16th, 2002 at Altamont Court Hotel, starting time is 3:00 pm. Several players will be recognised for their efforts in 2001. Yours truly is nominated for Player of the Year! Wish me well. Some other awards are Most Promising Player, Best Sportsman, Best Female, Most Improved, and Best School. Chess enthusiasts, you won't want to miss this one. See you there!

Thrilling fight-back in Masters Knockout Chess Championship

Jomo Pitterson stormed back in the third game against Shane Matthews on Saturday, June 1, 2002. After going down 2-0 in the four-game series, Pitterson had to win to stay in contention. And that he did! Winning that game meant that Pitterson still had a chance to pull off the unexpected in the fourth and final game... However, after building up what seemed to be heading to a brutal finish, both players agreed to a draw. (Yes! In chess you can do that) So Shane "The Magician" Matthews won 2.5 - 1.5 and was crowned the 2002 Masters Knockout Champion. Congrats Shane... but please don't come after my National Championship title. (smile)

The Liguanea Chess Club puts off moving

The Liguanea Chess Club will no longer be moving to 8A Kensington Crescent. A lot of chess fans might not know this but The Liguanea Chess Club has an excellent concept in mind... one that will bring a loud cheer from all chess lovers! This is it... the intention is to create a premiere venue for chess players, where they would be able to play comfortably under excellent conditions and get first class training. The venue is designed to have a lounge, a tuck shop and outdoor sporting facilities. However, because of a few unforeseen developments, The Liguanea Chess Club's new venue will not be at 8A Kensington Crescent. Hey, no need to worry though, a new venue will be announced soon!

Universities and colleges

recruiting chess players

Maybe you thought only basketball and football players got those prestigious scholarships to colleges? Think again! It seems there's a tough battle for recruiting chess players for colleges. Of course all colleges want to be considered as the one with the brightest students... and chess players are long considered as smart! (How long did it take to figure that?) Here's an excerpt from an article on this new development:
