MO: Modus Operandi - Making Music in St Ann
Kaydian Harty, Observer TeenAge writer
Tuesday, May 10, 2005

Doing music was just a childhood dream for the members of the group MO (Modus Operandì), which is based in Ocho Rios. But two-and-a-half years ago their dreams became reality. Today, with four members, three young men and a young woman, they are enjoying every bit of their budding career.

The members are Kemar Turner (Timmy T), who is 22 years old and a past student of the Meadowbrook and the York Castle High Schools, and enjoys playing basketball, performing, writing lyrics among other things. His biggest influence is his mom and a very close friend. His favourite artistes are Jay-Z, Fabolous and TOK.

Isis Nicholson, the lone female in the group, is a past student of Ferncourt High School, and enjoys writing music and performing among other things. Her favourite artistes are Tupac, Nas, Bob Marley and Eve, and the people that influence her life the most are her mom and brother, Nyrene Nembhard, who is also a member of the group.

Lloyd Pecoo, who also uses the name Chadrick, is a past student of Ferncourt High School who enjoys listening to music and artistes from various musical genres. While Nyrene Nembhard (Krudy), who seems to be the 'comic cut-up' in the group, enjoys writing poetry, listening to music, playing basketball and cricket. His favourite artistes include Tupac, Method Man, Ice Cube, Shabba Ranks, and Super Cat, among others.

The group writes their own songs and has been busy with promoting their music. They released their first video only a few weeks ago, which has been getting support from local stations such as Reggae Sun and others. They are set to start recording this week and are only too eager to begin.

KAYDIAN HARTY (KH) - Why did you choose the name Modus Operandi?

MODUS OPERANDI (MO) - This phrase means the way in which one operates, and for us that's excellence at all times. We always try to give 100% to our work. It's also a way of identifying us.

KH- How long has this group been together and how did it start?
MO - The group has been together for two-and-a-half years. Chadrick and Krudy, the founding members, started it while still in high school, Isis joined while still a student at Ferncourt, and Timmy T joined after high school, while a student at Moneague College.

KH - Do you specialise in any one type of music?
MO - It's a mixture of everything, reggae, R&B, hip hop and sometimes jazz.

KH - Why did you choose to explore genres other than reggae?
MO - We did this to bring something new to the table. We're influenced by a lot of cultures and music.

KH - What particular age group are you targeting, and what has been your feedback?
MO - We're trying to target everybody, trying to do something universal, something household. And we are getting excellent feedback; everybody says its different stuff and we are happy with that.

KH - You did your video only a few weeks ago. What was that experience like?
MO - It's hard work, yet fun, and sometimes the long hours we put in are tiring. It was also educational as we learnt about the equipment used in the industry and it helps to develop your performance skills, so overall it was enjoyable and exciting.

KH - Have you performed on any shows before and if so which ones?
MO - We have performed at charity events like the 'Friends of The Sea'. We've also performed at the Miss Jamaica local pageant, and at last year's staging of the Miss Jamaica Commonwealth pageant. We have also performed at schools such Marcus Garvey Technical High School. Our most recent performance, however, was for Our Voices, a talk show which is aired on CVM and overseas.

KH - What's the worst experience you've had since you've been in the music business?
MO - The worst experience was getting booed off stage, which turned into something motivational for us as it inspired us to be more professional and to try harder.

KH - What's the best experience you've had?
MO - Our best experience would be doing shows and getting good feedback, but overall it's performing - performing for Jamaican producers and artistes and them liking it. Tanya Stephens was one who's heard us and liked us.

KH - What can we expect from MO in the future?
MO - Gradual growth and improvement in all aspects of the music. We are committed to excellence and will work hard to achieve it. We intend to contribute positively to the music industry through our music. Listen out for us, until then, keep it 'jiggy'!
