St Andrew Drumming Ensemble
Letters

Tuesday, October 04, 2005

Greetings,
Congratulations to the girls at St Andrew High for forming a drumming group. As one who is very involved with drumming, I am bringing to your attention that they are by no means the first all-female drumming group as stated in your article.

Subira Gordon, past student of Titchfield High School in Port Antonio, now a student at Bates College in Maine, formed her own all-female drumming group in 1999.

Drumming since the age of five, Subira was featured on the American children's series Sesame Street in a segment titled 'A day in the life of Subira' and in the National Geographic Children's magazine.

She has also represented Jamaica on the international stage, performing in West Africa, New York, Philadelphia and in the Caribbean. In 2000 she was the recipient of the Prime Minister's Youth Award for the performing arts.

Although no longer an all-girls group, her group, the Nayamka Drummers, won the World Champion trophy at the World Championships of the performing Arts held in Los Angeles in 2001.
Hope you find this information interesting.

Peace,

Sista P
