10 Tips for Smoother Skin
Anthony Alexander , Observer TeenAge writer
Tuesday, October 11, 2005

1) Read product labels - Cosmetic products that contain lanolin, isopropyl myristate, sodium lauryl sulfate, laureth-4, and D & C red dyes should be avoided.

2) Do not squeeze pimples or whiteheads - A pimple is an inflammation, and squeezing it can infect it, making the area more inflamed. It is okay to squeeze a blackhead, as this will help it to heal faster.

3) Use over the counter medication to fight acne - Benzoyl peroxide is a great over-the-counter drug. The benzoyl part of the compound suppresses fatty acids in the skin, while the peroxide breaks down to release oxygen, which kills the bacteria.

4) Don't mix treatments - If an acne medication is prescribed by your dermatologist, stop using your over the counter preparations.

5) Watch your treatment strength - Do not use too high a concentration of benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid if your skin is overly irritated by their use. A 2% concentration is always a safe start, and the concentration can be gradually increased.

6) Stay out of the sun - Acne medication may react adversely with the infrared rays of the sun; so long periods of sunlight exposure are not advisable.

7) Scrub that skin - Cleanse your skin as often as needed daily. A gentle scrub is advised weekly.

8) Give extra care to dry skin - A moisturizer twice per day is recommended.

9) Stop the spread of acne - Apply acne medication about a half inch around the affected area, to help keep the acne from spreading. Medication does not really act as a remedy, but as a preventative.

10) Watch your diet - Contrary to popular belief, acne is not specifically caused by eating too much chocolate. However, foods high in fats, sugars and spices are known to be acne aggravators. Drinking lots of water and eating fresh fruits and vegetables help to fight acne attacks. Good luck!
