Acne is a skin disease caused by the over-activity of the oil glands. It is most common in the adolescent years.
Acne starts from between ages 10 and 13 and usually last five to ten years. Acne is also a common skin affliction because of changes in the sebaceous (oil) glands. When these glands become blocked or inflamed to varying degrees and this condition is also characterised as pimples, blackheads, outbreaks, zits and sometimes scarring.
Acne is not restricted to the face, it can also be found on the chest, neck, back, and upper arms. The most common form of acne is known as 'acne vulgaris' (common acne), where excessive secretion of oils from the glands combines with natural dead skin cells to block the follicles.
Acne is mainly grouped in two categories: inflammatory and non-inflammatory. Inflammatory acne occurs when the whiteheads become inflamed and pimples and pustules develop. In its most severe form, inflammatory acne can cause disfiguring and scars on the face. Non-inflammatory acne occurs when just a few blackheads and whiteheads are on the face. It is a mild type of acne and it can be treated with non-prescription medicines.
