Being a virgin is a problem these days
By Renee Montague Observer TEENage writer The PreUniversity School
Tuesday, June 06, 2006

Recently, I sat just shooting the breeze with a group of friends - including two males - and was shocked when one asked the other about a his relationship with a young lady and the other responsed, in a tone of dismay that she had been a virgin!

The thought that teenagers can no longer enter a relationship without the possibility of engaging in sexual intercourse as a reward hadn't before occurred to me. Where have the days of sex as an act of pledging undying love gone? Whatever happened to the days when virginity in a young lady was expected, lauded and made her a treasure?

Why are virgins now being treated as lepers? Is this just another measure of how far we, as a so-called Christian society, have strayed from the teachings of the Bible? Despite the ever increasing number of former virgins in my midst, Christians and non-Christians alike, I held the belief that the pressure to have sex was not increasing.

What a fool I was! The pressure seems to be on now more than ever before as guys and girls alike seem more comfortable in applying it. However, please be advised that there are still those of us of both genders holding on.

When you find yourself faltering, look to your neighbour who has given up, or think about the myriad of problems that come along with becoming sexually active, like sexually transmitted infections, and I guarantee you will find the strength to carry on, and, of course, there is always prayer.
