Have Jamaicans become more accepting of homosexuals?
TEEN EDITORIAL

Tuesday, February 20, 2007

Jamaica is still regarded as one of the most homophobic countries in the world, but have we become more tolerant of homosexuals in our society. To the point where we now see homosexuals and do nothing, we just see and blind.

This point is highlighted when people see these people who exhibit homosexual activities in public places and stores and do nothing. People just merely talk big and bold about how wrong these people's actions are when they are out of the ear of these people or whisper it under our breaths and sometimes go as far as supporting them, by buying their products. Thus, by supporting them haven't we become more homo-friendly than homophobic?

One can even look on the incident that occurred on Wednesday of last week, whereby three homosexual men were attacked by rioters for allegedly being caught in a compromising manner. Once these three men were spotted, a mass group of around 2,000 people gathered around Monarch pharmacy, waiting to beat the three men. This response by the rioters is an expected reaction, but would the reaction have been the same if these three men were to act blatantly gay without the compromising action, which we see displayed at some of the high end stores we shop at?

For when most people see some of these men who act as if they got a tablespoon too much of oestrogen, from the creator. People usually just mouth them under one's breath and let them be. Would this have been the reaction if these men hadn't done anything publicly? In any case, that reaction of silent mouthing would be one of acceptance of homosexuals rather than discrimination towards homosexual activity correct?

Even in our personal circles, we seem to be more accepting of the homosexual society. For when males are around our fellow male compatriots we are at our most resilient towards the homosexual society but once males are by themselves their entire motif of arguing changes from one whereby you say, "Me will shoot a faggot", to one of "as long as them don't trouble me, I'm good".

Females on the on the other hand may not openly show or state detest for homosexuals. They instead look forward to meet a gay-male person, either to just to get know a gay person or to see if gays actually make good friends. Based on reports made by some women, that they claim to share the same interests, in clothes, styles and of course men without the bad attitude attributed with women. So women have actually accepted them in our society, just the way a guy dreams of having two girlfriends at once.

All and all it's up to you to decide whether or not you have become more accepting to the homosexual side in Jamaica or if you still choose to hate every aspect of it. One thing we should all remember in all our actions is that thou shalt not judge. More importantly you can be sent to prison for far longer than nine years on the alleged charges these three men might face for buggery rather than murder.
