Reggae/Rap star, Sean Kingston, flew into Jamaica recently to film a segment of MTV's Sweet 16 series in commemoration of his 18th birthday. Sean spent the weekend in Ocho Rios, where he hung out at Jack Ruby's plaza on James Avenue, where his legendary grandfather's studio is still located, greeting long-time friends and former schoolmates at Ocho Rios High School. Needless to say, his presence caused a traffic jam in Ocho Rios, especially on James Avenue. |
Sean Kingston, Ocho Rios' home-grown talent, celebrated his 18th birthday at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Hotel last weekend.
Sean's entry was by sea on an exotic catamaran dancing to the sounds from the Renaissance Disco crew whose selection of Welcome to Jamrock was most appropriate for such an event. When he landed he made his entry to the poolside, which was exquisitely decorated dancing to Party Like A Rockstar.
General manager of the Sunset Jamaica Grande, Minister Ed Bartlett & Carole Guntley-Brady presented Sean with a large portrait of himself after which Minister Ed Bartlett gave a small welcome speech and highlighted that Sean was one of Jamaica's ambassadors through his music worldwide.
Sean then gave a small reply speech but was eager to begin his super 18 birthday celebrations but not before paying his respects to all his friends and family that have supported him throughout his journey. Sean made it clear to everyone about his Jamaican roots, that he was born and raised in Ocho Rios and is the grandchild of the late Jack Ruby, Ocho Rios and Jamaica's established sound system operator and producer.
The party went underway with dancing from MOB and First Class dancers. Sean joined in doing all the latest Jamaican dance moves. Other performances came from Jamaica's own Cherine Anderson serenading Sean for his birthday. Sean's labelmates 'The Dey' performed and Shaggy as the guest of honour who performed his smash hits Mr Boombastic and Church Heathen. Christopher Martin performing with Shaggy gave his Jamaican Girls something scream about.
It was time for the cutting of the cake which was transported in like a pharaoh carried by four beautiful ladies dressed in grass skirts. Sean cut the cake, with a picture of himself and decorated in the colours of the Jamaican flag with his father (you guessed it, 'Papa Kingston'). Sean acknowledge the fact that his mother who was his main support was not able to make the celebrations but was surprised by the MTV crew who were able to deliver a pre-recorded message from his mother giving birthday wishes. Sean's mother had some words of encouragement for her son before unveiling his birthday gift - a Bentley. Secondly, his aunt who was on hand to witness the celebrations presented Sean with a custom-made Louis Vitton sunshade. He was then later presented by executives from EPIC records a plaque for record sales in excess of seven million. This moment was shared by most of Sean's family who were there to celebrate with him.
Following the presentations Renaissance Disco then cranked up and put the party in high gear with the latest in dancehall tunes which had the party rocking enjoyed by Sean's guests who were on hand. Other DJ's present were DJ Envy and DJ Demerio a close friend of Sean who came to celebrate with him.

The celebrations were captured on film by the MTV crew, which should be aired on MTV celebrity super birthday series.
Some of Seans guests included the likes of Grace Jones. The afterparty continued at Ocean's 11, one of Ocho Rios' happening spots and Sean could be seen jamming to the latest dancehall riddims and mingling with the crowd and representing Jamaica to the fullest extent. It seemed that the night could not be spent in one location as the party continued at Margaritaville into the wee hours of the morning.
