Can't keep them off you?
Shiv Rambarran
Tuesday, April 22, 2008

I'm referring to the pounds, of course. The reality is that even in these, our young and prime years, we need to care about our health and weight. Too frequently do we eat and as we please only to suffer the consequences in the not so distant future. Not to fear. Here are some dieting secrets to lose weight - without actually dieting:

1 Read the labels
If you want to lose weight, paying attention to food labels is a must. You should be able to count the calories by calculating the calories per serving to the amount of servings of that food product.

Warning: People see the calorie count of a serving of a typical drink is 110 calories, not realising there are 2.5 servings, so actually the amount of calories being ingested is (110 x 2.5) = 275 calories!

2 Stop Skipping Meals
Skipping meals is one of those dieting mistakes most of us make at one time or another. But meal skipping does your diet more harm than good. When you don't eat, your body goes into 'starvation mode' thinking you have no food and will actually retain weight and burn less calories. Skipping meals too often will cause your body to actually hang on to weight rather than lose!

3 Say Yes to Snacks
It's important to maintain blood sugar levels by eating about every three hours. If it's been five or six hours since your last meal, you need to start planning snacks. If you get too hungry you'll more likely break and overeat your next meal. (Remember to keep the snacks healthy and low calorie)

4 Drink lots of Water
Besides being vital to daily health, substituting water for high sugar/high calorie drinks (for example: soda) can cut hundreds of calories in a day. Also staying well hydrated will help you feel more satisfied, which may prevent overeating and improves your overall sense of well-being.

5 Just Get Moving
Exercising will boost your metabolism and the higher your metabolism the more calories you will burn. Try to make use of opportunities to play sports or even just to walk a lot. Those of you who walk to and from school - thumbs up - you're ahead already!

6 Divide your portions
Pay attention to the portion sizes you have. Eating three big meals a day will stretch your stomach and make you need more food to satisfy your hunger. Divide those same meals into five or six smaller meals to have at three to four-hour intervals throughout the day. The regular eating will keep you satisfied and the smaller portions will 'shrink yuh stomach' making your body need less food over time to satisfy you.

7 Stop before you're full - and still be full
It takes approximately 15 minutes for your body to realise it is full, so really when your stomach's full you don't realise and keep on eating, finding out minutes later when your 'belly buss'. Eating slowly and stopping before you think you're full will give your body time to realise it's full and although you may feel a bit unsatisfied when you stop, 15 minutes later you'll realise you're full!

8 Eat to live - not - live to eat
Get out of emotional eating or eating when you're bored. Pay attention to your body and eat not when food looks good but when you're hungry.

Follow these simple eight rules and lose the weight for 2008!
