What are the types of acne spots?
Often times, acne involves an increase in oil production, so persons with acne may notice that they have a more oily skin than others. Also, along with this affected persons may recognise two types of spots on their skin. These spots can be further divided into two categories: red and swollen (inflamed) and not red or swollen (non-inflamed).
Inflamed spots are called pustules, nodules, papules or cysts; while non-inflamed include blackheads and whiteheads.
Blackheads are made up of cells in the pores of the skin and a collection of skin pigment, while whiteheads are about the same size, but are skin coloured and usually outnumber blackheads. When bacteria and oil become trapped thus blocking the pores, inflammation develops, or the spot gets inflammed. Inflamed spots, especially cysts can cause scarring, so it would be best not to squeeze or pick your acne. However, now that acne has become a very treatable disease, this should become a miniscule problem in the future.
Scarring can occur in two forms, whether as ice pick scars, which look like small groves in the surface of the skin, or keloid scars, which are raised from the surface of the skin and thickened.
