PARTY REVIEW - Black Rain
Tuesday, June 23, 2009
Presentation: 2/5
Although parking and traffic flow proved efficient, they also proved the only positive aspect of this category. The décor was greatly lacking, as was roadside presence. One could not tell a party was taking place on the interior of the venue.
Venues & Facilities: 3/5
The entire layout of speakers, the deejay area and bars were okay, with each being conveniently located. The bathrooms were non-porta-potty in nature, which is always a plus. The major drawback, however, was the expansiveness of the venue, much too large for the crowd.
Crowd: 1/5
The crowd had a decent demographic: upper high school to college students but that could not save it. The turnout was very poor, unable to fill a great majority of the venue.
Music: 4/5
The only more-than-fair aspect of the night was the music. Minus the selector being too vocal, the selection of oldies and recent hip hop, dancehall and alternative garnered a good crowd response.
Perks/Amenities: 3/5
Bar service was consistent and free flowing and nothing ran out. While there was no food inside the event, one could have headed outside to one of the vendors after (or before) the party to get a bite to eat.
PARTY REVIEW - Cloud IX
Presentation: 2/5
Similarly to it's contender Black Rain, there was little parking and traffic problems but décor was definately needed. Besides a white tent with blue and white cloth framing the entrance, there was little "heavenly" about the venue adornment. The best decorations of the night: the Cloud IX angels.
Venues & Facilities: 2/5
The venue proved far too large for the amount of patrons inside the event. The layout was fair, with three bars lining the left end and another at the front so the two porta-potties seemed adequate for the patrons.
Crowd: 2/5
The turnout was very poor, but there was at least some range in patrons, from about thirteen years to late twenties. Cloud IX, however, could boast a celebrity in their midst with dancehall darling Timberlee spotted at the event.
Music: 3/5
Music consistency was very poor early in the night with the selector jumping between genres and easily losing crowd interest. There were also many lulls in between songs. Things picked up minutes after one when DJ Ali Patch got the crowd moving to some current Dancehall hits. He also held a dancing competition for tickets to upcoming parties.
Perks/Amenities: 4/5
Drinks were in abundance and the bar maids and gents were well able to handle the needs of the small crowd.
PARTY REVIEW - Hawaiian Fantasy
Presentation: 4/5
For the first in a long while, promoters put in effort to give an ambiance. With girls in grass skirts and bikinis, a bamboo shack at the entrance and more bamboo at the bars and leis given out to patrons, the tropical theme was brought to life. What's more, organisation of vehicle and patron traffic was efficient.
Venues & Facilities: 4/5
The venue provided adequate room for the turnout of patrons, though in some areas space to dance was limited. Also, the area was dusty. However, the layout was very good. Music could be heard from all areas and with three well-placed bars; a bar was accessible wherever one went. Porta-potties were the form of bladder relief for patrons.
Crowd: 4/5
The turnout was the best of the night, with persons flocking to Akbar, even from other events. While there may have been more guys than girls, it was not enough to be intimidating or to "bruk vibes". Patrons ranged in age from mid-TEENs to mid-twenties.
Music: 4/5
Much like everything else at Hawaiian Fantasies, the music was good. Good mixing of recent Dancehall and Hip Hop and few lulls in music had the crowd fully enjoying themselves.
Perks/Amenities: 3/5
Bar service was relatively hassle-free. Getting a bartender's attention and ordering was more or less effortless. However, the actual service was very slow. Thankfully, nothing ran short behind the bars.
