Today, marks the end of our inaugural Western Kingston Inter School Grade 9 Math Competition and hopefully the beginning of a revival of interest, motivation, progress and improved performance in the subject.
Having observed the success of our own Inter-grade Math Competition we thought it would be interesting to see a competition among the schools in our area. As a result, St Anne's High, Kingston High, Denham Town High, St Andrew Technical High School (STATHS) and Tivoli all took up the challenge.
And a challenge it was - some schools quickly came on board while others had to be gently persuaded. However, in the end, we don't think there is a single school or a single student who participated that has any regrets doing so.
We, therefore, say a big thank you to the principals and heads of department of these schools for giving their full support to their teachers and students.
During the competition you showed commitment by always being present and early for your matches and here we must mention Kingston High who despite being on Mid-term break and having already lost two matches were very early for their match that day and guess what, they were rewarded with their first win that very day.
We also want to commend the students for their display of growth and determination throughout the competition and here we want to single out St Anne's High. St Anne's High first match they ended with a negative score, but turned up the very next day to beat their opponents by a significant margin and repeated this performance in their subsequent match. As one member of the team later said: "Miss the first day we were nervous and unsure of what we were doing but now that we have the hang of things we are doing much better." Well done St Anne's.
To our sponsors whose support was vital in rewarding your efforts we also say a big thank you.
Once again congratulations Tivoli, well tried STATHS.
