'I feel really great, confident' - How Suva lost 47 pounds
Monday, January 30, 2012
Name: Suva Sarkar
Marital status: Married
Occupation: Housewife
Starting weight: 203 lbs
Current weight: 156 lbs
Goal weight: 145 lbs
1. What was your turning point?
I had many health problems being overweight, including shortness of breath, lack of energy and disturbed sleep. Two things motivated me a lot — first I wanted to enjoy life and keep good health and second was people's insensible remarks about my weight.
2. What lifestyle changes did you make?
I made some major changes in my lifestyle. I changed my food habits having almost no carbs, sugar, carbonated drinks and junk food and drinking lots of water, and having smaller meals. I started eating green vegetables, fruits and healthy snacks too. And above all, regular exercise, as little as a 30-minute walk.
3. How long did it take for you to start seeing results?
I started this in October 2011 and got results in three weeks. At that time I had lost about eight pounds. By November I lost a total of 15 pounds. The first few weeks were tough with regards to staying away from temptation of not having good food and my initial rate of weight loss.
4. What were the challenges you had to face?
I am very passionate about food, whether it's cooking or eating. I was cooking everything for my husband and was not able to eat it. That was a difficult challenge.
5. How has your life changed since losing the weight?
None of my clothes fit now, so I get to go shopping again! Jokes apart, I feel really great, confident, and of course healthier. People ask me how I did it and what's my secret. I really feel proud of my achievement; at the same time I want to encourage and help others with my experience.
6. What is your new-found comfort food?
Roasted Brussels sprouts with salt and pepper and chicken kebabs.
7. What advice would you give to our readers who are trying to lose weight?
In my entire journey, I found it's the easiest thing to give up or get frustrated. Indeed, it is frustrating, but you have to challenge yourself and learn to win. As my mom always says, "Never say you cannot do; think a hundred times, why can't you do?".
Suva's exercise advice
1. Exercise is important with a good diet plan. Walk for 40 minutes, four or five days per week.
2. If you have certain health issues talk to a doctor before starting any diet programme or exercise.
Suva's eating plan
Breakfast: fruits, eggs, tea/coffee
Lunch: protein dish, example chicken/fish/shrimp/mutton with lots of greens and very little or no carbs.
Dinner: sandwich and tea or pretty much same as lunch, only less.
Snacks: fruits.
