Simple remedies to treat menstrual cramps
GYNOISSUES
Monday, March 29, 2010
FOR many women, the monthly menses bring an unpleasant variety of problems -- from nausea to terrible cramps, to mood swings. The cramps can be so terrible sometimes, that they affect a woman's ability to function normally.
If you're a woman whose life is put on hold each month while you battle the cramps, know that there are ways to ease the distress, that do not have to include you medicating yourself.
Some include:
* Walking or light exercise: Walking or light exercises will release the muscle tension and reduce menstrual cramps as it improves the circulation to pelvic organs. Light exercise routines that stretch the hips and other joints but do not pressure the abdomen is recommended.
* Herbal tea: Herbal tea with ginger root is said to be a good source of relieving your pain.
* Avoid salty and sweet foods: Avoid eating salty and sweet foods as they will make you feel sluggish. Instead consume more vegetables, fruits, chicken and fish at this time. Instead of heavy meals three times per day, try small portions throughout the day.
*Avoid caffeine and chocolate: Caffeine and chocolate intake should be avoided as they are believed to contribute to menstrual discomfort by making you nervous.
*No alcohol: Alcohol is believed to worsen menstrual pains and make the flow heavier.
* Warm water remedy: Hot substances work as pain relievers, so taking a warm water bath can relieve the cramps. You can also use a heating pad on your belly and back, or lie on your back in the shower, while letting the water beat down on the abdomen. The hot water will ease the pain and relax the muscles.
* Calcium and magnesium: Calcium maintains the normal muscle tone while magnesium optimises calcium absorption in the body, resulting in the non-existence of cramps.
* Take vitamins: Vitamin and mineral intake is believed to be a sure way of preventing cramps.
* Sea salt and baking soda bath: Add one cup of sea salt and one cup of baking soda to warm water and soak for about 20 minutes.
