Dear Donovan,

I would really love to maintain my weight but I really don't have time to go to the gym. I am currently 140 pounds and I am comfortable at this weight, although I wouldn't mind losing five pounds. I always watch the infomercials advertising exercise programmes on cable and I am inspired by the amount of weight women lose. But I am also a natural sceptic and so I often question whether the testimonials are for real. What do you think about the use of exercise videos to lose weight? Also, what do you think I should look for when purchasing a video? I think working out at home would be better for me given my busy schedule, although I am worried about my ability to stay motivated.

It is good that you are at a weight that you are comfortable with, although losing another five pounds would allow you to have a better chance of maintaining your weight at around 140 pounds.

Maintaining one's weight after weight loss is not necessarily the easiest thing to do. It is so easy to put on back the weight if you are not careful. The best way to maintain one's weight is to adopt a healthy lifestyle programme consisting of exercise and a proper diet. In your situation, it would be good if you took off the extra five pounds. This will give you what I call "wiggle room" so that your lowest weight would be 135 and your highest weight 140. What it means is that you would have to keep a check on your weight. When you are 140 pounds, you will need to try and lose some of the weight to get back to 135 and try not to go too much above that.

Let us say that you are travelling or Christmas is coming; it would be best if your weight was at 135 pounds at these times. In order to lose your five pounds, you will need to reduce how much you eat and do your workouts. It is quite okay to use exercise videos to help with your weight loss or maintenance programme. When buying an exercise video, it is very important to get one that suits your needs and ability at this time. Also find one that fits your personality. It makes no sense getting a video that you won't enjoy or which is too advanced or hard for you. At the same time, it would be good to get a workout programme that starts at your level and increases in intensity over time.

In order to be motivated, it is important that you change up your routine over time. It must be noted that in your weight loss or weight maintenance programme, the food intake will also be a bigger factor in your success, so keep a close look at what you are eating. Exercise can make you feel hungry, so manage what you eat after your workouts. While testimonials are very good, it is better to meet persons whom you know and trust and who have got results from exercise or diet or both.
