We’re back with more wedding trends from Kingston Bridal Week, which was held at the Wyndham Kingston from September 8-16. Check out these styles for your special day.

Ribbon Belt

It's not enough for the dress to just flow on your body anymore. To up the style ante, brides have been creating elegant belts in delicate hues — some bead-embellished — to cinch the waist for a more confident and flattering silhouette.

Portrait Back

The portrait back gives the modern bride a sexy edge while remaining elegant. It may be a lace, sheer, or keyhole design.

Convertible Gowns

With the growing requests from brides who require two dresses for their big day, many designers have resorted to creating 'convertible dresses' featuring removable skirts, trains, and capes to transform your ceremony dress into a distinct reception look.

Lace

It's the mesmerising effect of lace that continues to make it a leading trend — even for your nuptials. It's soft, sensual and romantic, with many a bride going for the 'ace in lace' effect for their big day.

Glittering Gems Every bride wants to shine on her wedding day, and some are taking it literally, with gemencrusted gowns. After all, the bride must never be outdone. Statement Flower Detailing Flowing romantic florals and statement flower detailing give an ultra-feminine finish to wedding gowns and is a hot trend right now.

BRIDAL ACCESSORY TRENDS

Headpieces While veils have been given a lift with lace and embroidered designs, most brides are opting for birdcage veils, feathered fascinators and even tiaras.

Colourful or Bedazzled Shoes

With most wedding dresses covering the brides shoes, the bride is often given creative freedom in her choice of shoes. Many brides are saying goodbye to the traditional white or metallic shoes and hello to satin shoes that complement the theme of the wedding. Brides are also choosing white shoes with delicate sequinned detailing.

CAKE TRENDS

The Upside-down Cake

The layered cake has been de riguer at weddings all over the globe for years. One rather unusual trend that has developed recently is the 'upside-down cake'. The smallest tier is at the bottom while the largest tier is placed at the top.

Ribbons

Wrapping a ribbon around your wedding cake is a modern trend. Wedding cake designers opt for bedazzled ribbons, brightly coloured satin or fondant varieties.

Monogrammed Cakes/Cakes with Pictures

More couples are opting to create unique wedding cakes. Personalised cakes can be seen in subtle monogrammed icing on a tier of the cake or even romantic photographs of the couple used to decorate the cake. There is no limit to making your cake as unique as you.

Fun or Artistic Cake Stands

Presentation is a key factor when creating your wedding cake display. Many bakers and patissiers have tried a more artistic approach in displaying the cake for guests. Café Sweet displayed their cake atop a fish bowl.

Cake Pops and Cupcakes

The cupcake trend has become increasingly popular for weddings. The couple is still afforded the tradition of cutting the cake (as the top tier is a small cake) and guests are given cupcakes. 'Cake Pops' are also being heavily requested as fun keepsakes for the guests.

Dummy Cake

For the couple on a budget who still wants to have a glamorous wedding, a 'dummy cake' is often used. Cake decorators have suggested that couples request cakes that have several tiers, which are fake, but are decorated to give the effect of a real cake.

FOOD TRENDS

Jamaican Menu

Couples have opted to incorporate more traditional Jamaican dishes for their guests to enjoy.

Desserts As most couples' gifts to their guests include takeaway fruitcake, the desserts served at the reception is rarely fruitcake. More couples are requesting cheesecake, red velvet cake or chocolate-based desserts.

PHOTOGRAPH TRENDS

Trash the Dress

Couples are increasingly expecting more from their wedding photos, and the 'trash the dress' feature is an example of these expectations. The concept behind trashing the dress is that in destroying the dress the couple would create a piece of art they would have forever. A piece of art in which you explore your wild side, as you are the actor of your own life, in a real, natural environment.

Conversation Pieces

It's in with candid photography and out with ‘pose for the camera’. Nothing tells the story of your wedding day more than capturing the sincere emotions you express to your spouse. It's all about being in the right place so you can forget the awkward, emotion-stifling poses and express what you really feel and that will make you're wedding photos unique.

Themed Photography

We hear vintage, nature and artistic, are three of the hottest themes for wedding photographs.

BEVERAGE TRENDS

While wine options may vary at each wedding, one new trend that is becoming popular is to have a wine bar at the reception, separate from the liquor bar. A great idea is to serve red, rosé, white, and sparkling wines to provide a full wine experience for guests.
